melbourne silver mine meet, may 31st

Meet at 11am at the corner of Smith Street & Victoria Parade, Collingwood (next to McDonalds). After shooting we’re off for drinks and snacks @ Kent Street, 201 Smith Street Fitzroy (from approx. 1pm)

Help us capture a typical Smith Street Sunday: show us the history, the people, the textures and juxtapositions of one of Melbourne’s most colourful strips. An exhibition of our day on Smith Street will be arranged for MSM members later in the year.

Should be good kids, hope to see you down there. silvermine.org.au

washington

I went to the Evelyn Hotel in Brunswick Street last night to see Jackson Jackson. My cousin had said she wanted to get there to see the support “Washington”; can’t say I’d ever heard of them but went along all the same. A petite Megan Washington took the stage with dark rimmed glasses reminiscent of Esme Watson. Solo at first, but then promptly with a complete band. They had an awesome energy on stage that dragged my sorry ass out of it’s tired state. The  dude on the xylophone and keys was stunning ( I think this name is Octopus Irwin; according to the myspace page). Megan’s voice reminded me of Abby Dobson… but on supped up go go juice. By the time they got around to playing Clementine, I finally relised that I had heard this band before but just didn’t know what they were called. After some research today I also realised that I had read about Megan in frankie too.

The stand out songs were “Underground” and “Chelsea” are both sticking in my head; each in their own unique way.

Chadstone JBHIFI didnt have the EP and there was nothing at the merch stand last night. So perhaps an iTunes purchase is in order. Oh yeah Jackson Jackson were fun too!

welcome back jpg magazine

jpg magazine are back on deck after a four month break. Good on them too! Glad to see that they were able to pull the bits and pieces back together and continue to inspire with their themes. In a newsletter update to members at the end of April, Seth Familian wrote about A Bright New Future.

First off, thank you!! It takes an amazing community to build something as unique as JPG, but it takes an even more remarkable, passionate, and committed community to come to JPG’s rescue. And that’s exactly what you did.

Your outpouring of support–whether on Flickr forums, blogs, or savejpg.com–demonstrated to the world (along with the investment community) that JPG is simply too special and unique to vanish. Our new investors agree with you–and believe strongly in the potential of JPG as a business. So I’m looking forward to working with them to creatively drive revenues while enhancing the quality of the JPG experience. I’m also looking forward to working with our Premier Community Partner, Adorama, to develop wonderful opportunities for all of you to reach a broader audience as well as better engage around the photography equipment you use and love. More on that to come!

Secondly, please be patient with us. While it’s very exciting to be able to continue operating this website and the broader business of 8020 Media, it’s going to take a little bit of time to get our operations back up and running at 100%. Therefore, it may take longer than normal to get responses from JPG Support or resolve issues that may have arisen with the website in the past 60 days. Thanks for your understanding on this.

And finally, start getting excited! The recent events at 8020 Media have given us a rare opportunity to step back, better understand the business, and develop a strategic plan that drives revenues while giving back to all of you–our incredible community members, without whom this site simply wouldn’t exist.

rest in peace bud

Veteran Australian actor Charles “Bud” Tingwell died yesterday morning, aged 86. He passed away  in a Melbourne hospital at 8.30am with his son and daughter by his side, after a battle with Prostate Cancer.

He appeared in over 100 films, according to Wikipedia, the first being Smithy in 1946. But perhaps his greatest work came about with The Late Show Guys and “Charlie The Wonder Dog”! Rest in Peace bud – thanks for being a top bloke!

If you would like to donate to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia you can do so here.

wooden pinhole camera

wooden pinhole cameraCheck out this little beauty that just flashed up on etsy . A wooden pinhole, delicately put together with loving care. It’s made out of of basswood and stained with mahogany red colour and topped off with a bit of a wax polish.

It comes in at a tiny 4.5” x 2.5” x 1.25” in dimension and a  focal Length = 20mm, F Stop = 130. 35mm film of course!

It would look more like an ornament than something that actually takes a shot but I’d image you’d get more than just one or two onlookers when you were shooting with this baby. Yours to own for USD$95 from Jaesong.

forever skipping

The skipping girl vinegar sign would have to be one of my favourite Melbourne icons. As a little girl I can remember my father telling us to look out the window because the skipping girl was coming up ahead. Which would results in us eagerly press our faces against the window just to catch a glimpse.

Forever Skipping

On a recent visit to Ikea I noticed she was gone! I immediately began to despair, until I noticed there was some commercial signing and a giant over sized rope on the roof top where she last stood. As it turns out “little audrey” is undergoing a makeover commissioned by the National Trust with a little help from AGL.

Since the signs original erection in 1936 she is undergone some changes. Changing to an illuminated sign in 1970, and undergoing several switch on switch offs over the last 40 years. She has currently been switched off since 2001 and living at her current home above Victoria Street (just near the corner of Burnly St). I went to photographer her during a Melbourne flickr meet in September 2006, using the roof top carpark of the building next door. These are the shots that resulted.

There is much debate around the identity of the Cornwell’s Vinegar icon. Mystery still surrounds the identity of the real ‘Little Audrey’. Some say the model for the Skipping Girl logo was the local milk bar owner’s daughter. Others claim that she was modelled on a girl who later went on to become a nun in a convent near Frankston.

Who ever she is …I’m excited by the National Trust and AGL project to restore her back to her illuminated best! Looking forward to June. For more info visit skippinggirl.com.au.
