a polite cat

I’ve had my second crack at making a plush toy this time for my niece India lily’s, baptism pressy. This is Millie, she is a polite cat. Indy’s first reaction was to chuck her on the floor and go for the next pressy, but hopefully they are good friends now! Millie is made largely from mauve gingham, a super cute owl print and has a felt face.

The hardest part of Millie was her face, so many round bits that that take ages to sew! I chose the bright blue eyes to match Indy’s eyes and the owl print because she is in love with Hoot on ABC kids.It wasn’t until I was wrapping this little cat that I realised the irony of a cat with owls in it’s belly – ha ha!

The pattern came from the meet me at mikes books as previously mentioned in the Ferdinand post.

an udderly lovely cow

I’d like you to meet Ferdinand, an udderly lovely cow. He is the new friend of a little guy called Archie and a testimony to my return to the sewing machine. I haven’t sewn anything using a machine, since I was in year 9 textiles. But I was recently inspired enough to purchase the Meet Me at Mike’s books by Pip Lincolne. So when Archie arrived on the scene it was time to get cracking. I pulled out the power blue singer (it actually has “blue magic” printed on the side of it!) that my Mum gave me, looked up the user manual online, gave it a service, figured out how to thread a bobbin and I was off!

Ferdinand is made with a mixture of new and recycled fabrics. The blue floral fabric is taken form some 70′s sheets, that were recovered from my Grandmother’s house. There are a total of 7 different types of fabric.  He took me around 8-10 hours to complete, but I think that was directly linked with me not being overly confident with what I was doing and still getting to know the the sewing machine.

In true toy story style, I decided to stitch Archie’s name into Fernidand’s right foot, for easy identification. This bit and Ferdinand’s face, were all freestyled and have loads of character, hence his crooked little smile!

The books have great easy to follow patterns. I’m in the process of sewing curtains for our back room at the moment (not in the books!). The curtains are much more straight forward than the curved lines of Ferdy, but I’m so proud to have given this guy a crack and being able to give the newly born Archie an ace handmade gift made with loads of love! You can check out Pip’s gorgeous blog here or visit her store Meet Me at Mike’s 63 Brunswick Street in Fitzroy.

summer clouds

For the first time in forever, I’m actually looking forward to Summer. Its been such a long and dreary Winter, but Spring seems to be happening all about the place. So I’m sure it wont be long. So as I dream of warmer days this little number caught my eye. Made from white porcelain clay with gloss clear glaze, the holes are made by piercing the clay with the potters needles. You can choose your sterling silver chain length too. Yours for US$40.

passing ports

Travel need not be drab anymore, so ditch your blue passport cover and trade up to this little beauty. It holds passports which are 9cm wide x 12.5cm high ( which most of them are…aren’t they?!). You can pick up this baby for a cool AUD$11.50  Odds and Blobs also make eye masks, pencil cases and other zip up type things.

want something a little different to hold your sleeves together?!? these little babies will be a talking point for sure. As I recently found these on etsy.com. Katie created DabbleDesigns (Pasadena CA) almost 3 years ago. She says in her profile that her motto is to create cool, quality items that won’t break the bank!
